VIRGINIA BEACH -- Three people were rescued after getting caught in a rip current near the Oceanfront Tuesday night.

The incident unfolded behind the Hilton Hotel in the 3000 block of Atlantic Avenue around 9 p.m.

Police say a man was swimming when he started drifting out to sea and couldn't get back. Two of his friends paddled out on boogie boards to try and help the man, but suddenly found themselves unable to get back to shore.

Two officers went in after the people and managed to pull all three to safety a short time later.
