VIRGINIA BEACH - The Virginia House of Representatives passed a bill Tuesday to scrap science and history SOL's for third graders.

House bill 2068 passed 98 to 1 and now goes to the Senate.

Virginia Beach teachers are pushing to eliminate the requirement.  District officials agree and are making the case to state lawmakers in Richmond.

Virginia Beach Education Association President Trenace Riggs says the move would allow teachers to focus more on math and English skills.

“If students are not doing well in reading and comprehension, then they will not do well in other subjects,” Riggs stated.

Additionally, last year the Virginia Department of Education made math tests more challenging. Riggs says that’s one reason why teachers need to spend more time focusing on math.

“Our students are already falling behind other countries in math skills. We want our students to be able to compete worldwide,” said Riggs.
