VIRGINIA BEACH - As Hurricane Sandy gets closer to the Virginia coast, the City of Virginia Beach is preparing to open parking garages so residents can move their vehicles out of harm's way.
Parking will be free from 11:00 p.m. Saturday to 6:00 a.m. Tuesday at the city parking garages at 9th and 31st streets at the Oceanfront and Town Center.
The 19th Street and 25th Street surface lots will be open and free during the same times, but these lots are not on higher ground.
Cars and vans may park in the garages, but no recreational vehicles, trailers or boats will be allowed.
The city reminds owners that it's not responsible for damage to vehicles that are left in city garages.
