VIRGINIA BEACH-- For the past 30 years Bernie Kirsch has been raising flags at the beach, and he's hoping to keep his legacy flying high.

If you’re walking out to the beach at 87th street, you'll notice a display of more than 80 flags from nations around the world.

"I do it to make people happy it's a fun thing to do," Kirsch said.

From Memorial Day Weekend to Labor Day, Kirsch is out there every Saturday and Sunday. It takes him about an hour and a half to hoist up all the flags.

It all began in 1984 when an old fish trap pole washed ashore on the beach.  Kirsch used his creativity to turn it into a flag pole, but years later he replaced it with a sturdy metal pole.

After carrying on his tradition for 30 years, he says he's ready to retire. He's looking for someone to replace him. "We'll interview a few people to see if they can handle the pressure of the job," he laughed.
