VIRGINIA BEACH -- The U.S. Coast Guard is investigating an unmanned boat that reportedly ran into the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.

The Coast Guard says that the 'rigid hull inflatable' boat is about 20-30 feet long, and they believe it may belong to the Navy.  The Coast Guard got a call about the boat around 2:00 p.m. Tuesday.

Members of the Coast Guard did not find anyone in the water nearby the boat.  Officials say it’s possible the boater could have been picked up by someone else.

The boat, which is still in the water, poses no threat to the waterway, according to Chief Petty Officer Mike Hvozda.

Coast Guard inspectors are looking at the bridge-tunnel for structural damage.

The Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel was closed for nearly 40 minutes this afternoon because of the incident.
