VIRGINIA BEACH -- Police are investigating two pharmacy robberies which left one person shot and led to a wild chase through Virginia Beach Monday morning.
Police tell 13News Now one person was shot during an attempted robbery at Beach Pharmacy at 501 Laskin Road around 11 a.m.
Janet Chenman was in the area and told 13News Now she saw the pharmacist being taken out of the business on a stretcher by emergency crews.
"He's a wonderful man. He's very young, has a young family. It's very tragic that on a beautiful day, in a beautiful city, and here we are. I can't believe this is happening. It's very shocking, very shocking."
Officials confirm the victim was taken to the hospital but have not released his name.
Police spokeswoman Tonya Borman says the suspect then robbed Barr's Pharmacy in the 1700 block of Atlantic Avenue.
Police quickly developed a suspect based on details from witnesses and a chase ensued on I-264 through Virginia Beach. Officials say it covered five to eight miles and the suspect was shooting at police. No officers or civilians were injured during the pursuit but multiple cars were shot, officials said.
An eyewitness tells 13News Now's Arrianee LeBeau police laid out spike strips, which flattened the tires of the blue SUV police were chasing.
The chase ended at the intersection of Witchduck Road and Virginia Beach Boulevard after the suspect slammed into a pickup truck.
Joseph Chatfield saw the pursuit fly past him.
"They all came out with their guns and one of them had a taser and they tased him and they jumped on him and cuffed him and they had him in the car before you know it," Chatfield said.
The suspect, who is described as a white man in his 40s, was taken into custody and transported to the hospital for evaluation, officials said. His name has not yet been released.
"If this individual was that brazen to go ahead and shoot at police officers, there's no telling what this individual was capable of doing," Borman said.
