VIRGINIA BEACH---The final stage of a project to end flooding at the Virginia Beach Oceanfront started Monday.
Crews are finishing the installation of a stormwater pumping station and pipeline on 61st Street.
Even during a relatively minor storm, portions of Atlantic Avenue can experience flooding at the northern end of the Oceanfront area.
The project manager tells 13News Now that the new system will dump stormwater 1,800 feet offshore.
"It's been a big inconvience for the residents with flooding," said Esther Dornin During a big storm this pump station will really show what it can do."
City officials say if they can get the funding, they plan to add similar systems at other sections of the beach in the future.
