VIRGINIA BEACH - Three juveniles are charged with setting fire to a neighborhood playground in Va. Beach.

The Dec. 7 arson forced the city to close all of Coventry Neighborhood Park on Monday, city officials said.

The three were apprehended and subsequently confessed to starting the fire, Battalion Chief James Ramsey told WVEC.com. They're being charged with arson, conspiracy and trespassing.

The park at 4757 Ardmore Lane won't reopen until the equipment is repaired/replaced and authorities determine the park is safe for families.

The fire significantly damaged the majority of the playground equipment, Rick Rowe, Parks and Natural Areas Coordinator, told WVEC.com, so in the interest of public safety, we have it closed until our Insurance Company can review the damage and we can demo/remove the damaged equipment.

The park contains playground equipment, a picnic shelter, swings, spring toys, and open play areas.

Rowe says he expects it will take at least 10-12 weeks to finalize insurance, demolish the damaged items and contract for the installation of new playground equipment.
