VIRGINIA BEACH--The Virginia Aquarium Stranding Response Team rescued Thursday a live gray seal on the Eastern Shore.
The team found it on Fisherman Island and brought it to the Virginia Aquarium Marine Animal Care Center for treatment and rehabilitation.
The center was alerted on Monday to the seal’s presence and its health was evaluated.
The male juvenile seal’s weight of 50 lbs. was lean but not seriously thin and its left eye was irritated. Otherwise, he was bright, alert and quite active.
The seal’s location and activity continued to be monitored throughout the week. However, Thursday’s evaluation of the seal showed that he was suffering from a worsening eye infection and there are now some signs of a respiratory infection as well.
The stranding team has dubbed the seal “Eyegore the Maniac” and he is the first seal the team has had in rehab for a couple of years.
The team is continuing to conduct medical tests to fully evaluate the seal's condition and treatment. The animal’s infections are being treated with antibiotics and other medications.
