VIRGINIA BEACH -- Red Star Tavern became the second restaurant in less than 2 weeks to close in Town Center.

A sign on the door from the City Treasurer's Office greeted anyone hoping to go into the restaurant Wednesday night. The posting said the business failed to pay more than $43,000 in taxes and/or fees. Virginia Beach stepped in and shut down Red Star.

Also on the door, a note from the restaurant:

All Red Star Tavern Patrons,

It is with great regret to inform you that Red Star Tavern will be closed, all of us here at Red Star Tavern would like to thank you for your support and patronage over the past 7 years.

Sincerely,

Red Star Tavern

The closing comes soon after Guadalajara called it quits. The Mexican restaurant's owner and Town Center's developer decided to shut down following a deadly shooting that happened near Guadalajara.

"A friend of mine called me and said, 'Oh, do you know you're having this party, and they're closing down?' I said, 'Nobody called me,'" explained Milton Miller.

Miller planned to celebrate his birthday at Red Star July 27. He signed a contract and was supposed to pay Red Star by July 15.

"I got people coming from out of town, the Bahamas and all the other places. It's just like, crazy," Miller told 13News Now. "Just ridiculous. People don't pay their taxes, and we're living in this nice neighborhood. It don't make no sense. We expect business to be done, and people don't take responsibility."

Red Star Tavern is owned by Restaurants-America which is based in Glenview, Illinois.

Because of the lateness of the day Wednesday, 13News Now wasn't able to get in touch with anyone at the company's headquarters.

A locally-based general manager, Melissa Frear, did respond to an email asking for a comment and how many employees are affected.

Frear wrote, "No comment at this time."

The closing comes on the heals of the closing of Guadalajara's Restaurant on June 30th.  That closing was the result of a shooting near the restaurant.
