VIRGINIA BEACH-Sad news from the Virginia Aquarium today - one of its rare crocodiles was found dead.

A necropsy will be done to determine what caused Grover's sudden death, officials said, because he had not been sick.

The 13-foot, 28-year-old tomistoma came to the Aquarium in 2009 and was part of the Restless Plant gallery. His mate, Gloria, is still there and is in good health, officials stressed.

"It is always a tragedy to lose an animal, but losing such a rare and precious one is doubly difficult,” said Aquarium Executive Director Lynn Clements. “Certainly our staff, and many of our regular visitors, will mourn his loss.”

"Grover" and "Gloria" were one of just seven breeding pairs of tomistomas in the U.S.
