VIRGINIA BEACH -- A large power outage in Virginia Beach early Tuesday was caused by a downed wire that sparked fire.

Authorities say it happened near Betty Williams Elementary School around 3:30 a.m.

Crews on the scene say a power pole fell, sparking the fire that damaged part of the road.

A photo posted on the WVEC13 Facebook page shows the fire burning near the Newtown Road school.

"Fire was coming from the ground," wrote Becky Double.

The fire cut power to hundreds of people, but many of them got power back almost immediately, authorities added.

Dominion Virginia Power crews were making repairs so power would be restored to everyone.  At the height of the outages, just before 4 a.m., more than 5,000 customers were without power.
