VIRGINIA BEACH -- One person went to the hospital Sunday afternoon after someone shot him outside Pembroke Mall.
Police said a fight involving a group of people started inside the building at about 2:30 p.m. The fight carried outside in front of Jason's Deli.
"I heard a shot, and everybody scrambled instantly," said one worker. "There was a kid that was crying and everything, and there were people were, obviously, very shaken up."
A mother, who asked not to be identified, was running errands with her son at the time. She told 13News Now that she walked out of the mall during the peak of the fight.
"Heard the woman yelling and didn't know what was going on," the mother explained. "Went back to see if I could help. Another man ran out. Next thing I heard was 'pop, pop.'"
Witnesses said the person who was hurt seemed to be hit in the shoulder. He ran to a store.
The woman who'd been yelling ran to a black Nissan Altima. A young boy sat inside the car.
"She slowly pulled out of the parking space, you know, backing up out of the parking space," recalled that mother who asked not to be identified. She added the alleged shooter then met up with the woman in the Nissan.
"He got in, and she gunned it further down the way," the mother recalled.
A short time later, Virginia Beach police officers surrounded the car at Independence and Virginia Beach Boulevards.
Early Sunday evening, police had not made an arrest. The person who was shot should be all right.
