VIRGINIA BEACH-The City of Va. Beach dedicated the new Fire Station 4 Wednesday.

The nearly $6 million Chesapeake Beach station on Greenwell Road is about a mile from its old location, which was prone to flooding.

It is a much bigger facility-more than 14,000 square feet on two floors. Upgrades include a state-of-the-art station alerting system and geothermal heating/cooling system. There are 10 sleep rooms, a decontamination room and much more.

Construction began on February 27, 2012 and was completed August 16, 2013.

Fire and EMS personnel at Station 4 cover calls north to include all of the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, south to Independence Blvd. and Pleasure House Road, east to the Lesner Bridge and west to Northampton Blvd. and Diamond Springs Industrial Park.

Crews also respond to assist the Norfolk International Airport Fire Department and Navy Mid-Atlantic Little Creek Fire Department.
