VIRGINIA BEACH-- A 76-year-old Michigan man died after nearly drowning at the Oceanfront on Sunday.

The victim is Joseph Gall of Lincoln Park, Michigan.  He was taken to a nearby hospital on Sunday, but died on Tuesday.

Shortly before 10 a.m. Sunday morning, crews were called to 60th Street at the Oceanfront in regards to a swimmer in trouble. The swimmer was apparently with a group of people when they began to struggle in the water.

Nearby beachgoers were able to help the people in distress. A local surfer paddled over to the group and put the victim on his board and took him to shore.

Officers and lifeguards began performing CPR on the man until EMS arrived a few minutes later.

The medical examiner's office will officially determine the cause of Gall's death.
