11/19 UPDATE: The judge imposed the jury's recommended sentence of 13 years and six (6) months in prison for Shaniqua Jones.
VIRGINIA BEACH-- A jury recommended a Virginia Beach mother spend the next 13 1/2 years in prison for her role in the death of her infant son in 2011.
Shaniqua Jones, 22, was convicted Thursday of 2nd degree murder and child abuse/neglect for the death of 19-month-old Kimauri Williams, according to Commonwealth's Attorney spokeswoman Macie Pridgen.
Medical authorities said Kimauri died of blunt force trauma to his abdomen and head. When the little boy got to the hospital, his body was covered in fingernail cuts, bruises and bite marks, likely received over a longer-term period of abuse, culminating with a more recent blow so severe it ruptured his liver and caused him to bleed to death internally, they stated.
Jones' live-in boyfriend, Alvin Gatewood, was convicted in March of 2nd degree murder and child abuse/neglect for his role in the infant's death.
According to Pridgen, Gatewood had been responsible for the vast majority of Kimauri’s care in the days leading up to his death.
Prosecutors say in the hours leading up to his death, Kimauri was vomiting, crying, and could not stand up without being supported and neither Gatewood nor Jones sought medical treatment for him.
Jones will be sentenced on August 14, 2013.
