VIRGINIA BEACH -- Work on the $18.9 million widening of Lynnhaven Parkway in Virginia Beach is set to begin this week.
VDOT crews are setting up trailers, electricity and getting equipment to the site to begin construction once the wet weather passes.
VDOT is widening Lynnhaven Parkway to four lanes from Indian River Road to Centerville Turnpike. The project will create an additional lane in each direction of Lynnhaven Parkway and create a connection between Chesapeake and Virginia Beach. This will be done by bridging a canal located between Centerville Turnpike and Indian River Road. After construction, Lynnhaven Parkway will be a continuous four-lane divided roadway.
During construction, one lane of traffic will be maintained in both directions.
The project is expected project completion is fall 2016.
The Commonwealth Transportation Board awarded the project to contractors in October 2013.
