VIRGINIA BEACH-- A mother was sentenced Monday to 15 years in prison for shaking her daughter to death in 2009 and abusing her 4-year-old son.

Julie M. Calahan, 24, pleaded guilty to child abuse and voluntary manslaughter in August 2012.

Prosecutors say Calahan's daughter Lakeira was found unresponsive in their home in May 2009.  She died in the hospital two days later.

Lakeira's uncle, Stephen Calahan, was initially arrested and charged in connection with the girl's death.  He spent 7 months in jail before the murder charge was withdrawn.

Stephen Calahan pleaded guilty to child neglect and was sentenced to one year in prison for failure to seek medical treatment for the infant.

Nearly two years later, Julie Calahan told a friend on Facebook that she caused injuries to her son that led him to be hospitalized twice and caused the death of Lakeira.

Prosecutors say Julie Calahan then admitted to shaking the infant multiple times, causing a fracture to Lakeira's skull.

Prosecutors say Julie's sentence was over twice the high-end of the recommended Virginia State Sentencing Guidelines.
