VIRGINIA BEACH (AP) -- A man already serving a prison term in South Carolina now faces a capital murder charge after his indictment on charges related to the fatal shooting of an off-duty Norfolk police officer in Virginia Beach.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that a grand jury handed up the indictment Monday against 21-year-old Lewis Perry. He now faces life in prison or death in connection with the slaying in October 2010 of 25-year-old Victor Decker.
Police have said little about how they have linked Perry to Decker's killing.
Perry is originally from Norfolk. He is serving a nearly 97-year sentence in federal prison in Bennettsville, S.C., for a string of violent robberies before Decker's death.
Prosecutors have not said whether they will seek the death penalty in Decker's slaying.
