UPDATE 5 p.m.: Police have identified the victim as 49-year-old Antonio Reid of the 3200 block of Yellow Pine Crescent in Chesapeake.

VIRGINIA BEACH - A construction worker in Va. Beach was killed on the job early Wednesday.

Fire units were called to a site on Townfield Lane near Nimmo Parkway just after 8:00 a.m.

He somehow got trapped by a excavator, but he was not pinned when fire crews arrived, said Battalion Chief Amy Valdez with Va. Beach Fire Department.

People on the scene were performing CPR when medics arrived.

Valdez added emergency personnel on the scene determined he had traumatic injuries. They contacted a doctor in the emergency room and, at the instruction of the doctor, efforts to resuscitate him were stopped.

Police are investigating.

The man's name hasn't been released, but he worked for A&W of Chesapeake. The company had no comment on the situation.
