VIRGINIA BEACH-- Images from the Connecticut school shooting pierced the hearts of millions watching from afar.  But for the Sander family, those images were personal.

Tom and Alice Ann Sander live in Virginia Beach now, but the family used to live near Sandy Hook Elementary and their daughter went to school there.

The Sanders lived in the quiet town for four years and they still call it "Utopia."

Alice Ann Sander broke the news to her grown-up daughter who went to kindergarten and first grade at Sandy Hook.

"She works with children so I think that made it particularly hard for her. She remembers being there and it being safe," Alice said.

Tom Sander couldn't watch the news the way his wife did. A mixture of shock and disgust overwhelms him.

"The first thing you get when you tell people that we lived there and our kids went to Sandy Hook, they just go into shock," Tom said.

Tom and Alice Ann both say that the tragedy in Newtown, Connecticut really can happen anywhere.
