VIRGINIA BEACH-- Dominion Power blamed an overnight lightning strike for a transformer failure Thursday afternoon.

The transformer failed around 4:25 p.m. in the 1100 block of First Colonial Road near Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.

About 3470 customers were affected including the hospital which was on generator power for a short time while power crews fixed the problem.

According to Bonita Harris with Dominion, it's believed a lightning strike overnight might have caused the failure.

Power was restored to the area around 6 p.m.
