VIRGINIA BEACH-Two people in a kayak had to rescued Monday morning.

Chief Ed Brazle with Va. Beach EMS says they got caught in a strong current under the Lesner Bridge around 10:00 a.m. and couldn't get back to shore.

Authorities said one of the city's three fireboats was going out and saw the kayak flip in the outgoing current. The man and woman in the boat got pinned against the pilings under the bridge. The man got free and was picked up by the boat, but the woman was stuck and holding onto the pilings, so the boat captain left a life ring drift to her and they pulled her to safety.

A fire boat picked them up and returned them to Bubba's Marina on Shore Drive and another crew brought in their kayak.

Rachel Wilson, a waitress at Bubba's, says she saw the rescue, explaining that a boater stopped to help, grabbing the kayak while fire crews rescued the people.

"People should do kind acts like that every day. It was really nice to see," she said.

Brazle said the two boaters were okay. The woman did have minor cuts to one leg from barnacles on the piling, and she refused treatment.
