VIRGINIA BEACH-- The Virginia Beach school district is welcoming back a former students as its new superintendent.
Dr. Aaron Spence graduated from Green Run High, and now he's back to lead the school district.
"It's an amazing and a humbling experience for me," Spence said.
At Windsor Woods elementary, teachers were welcomed back by not only the new superintendent but also a new principal. "I think my goals are to first build relationships, get in and get to know the staff, to get to know the students," Windsor Woods elementary principal Matt Orebaugh said.
Despite new leadership heading Virginia Beach schools, parents shouldn't expect any major changes this year. "We will continue to focus on things that we do really well. We are going to continue to make sure we are building strong readers and writers," Spence said.
English and reading SOL tests are becoming more challenging, and Dr. Spence expects to see a drop in test scores from last year. "I think with some of the changes to the accountability models, and changes to the cut scores we are probably going to see what we have seen regionally, which are decreases in our test scores."
