VIRGINIA BEACH - It's the first day of school at the new Kellam High School in Va. Beach.
The $102 million, two-story building can accommodate 2000 students and is a "green" school with features like rainwater harvesting, a bamboo wood floor in the gym, low-water use fixtures and an energy-efficient HVAC system with geothermal wells.
The School Board voted in January 2010 to buy the 108-acre site at 2665 West Neck Road for $8.1 million. Ground was broken on September 30, 2011.
The old Kellam was on Holland Road.
Students and parents were excited about the new school.
Roger Waisanen posted on the WVEC13 Facebook page, "I visited during open house and it is fantastic."
Lynn Marie Edwards added, "The thing I love most about the new building is how bright it is. There is so much natural light!"
