VIRGINIA BEACH - People living in the Green Run section of Va. Beach should see some relief from flooding, but it will take a while.

City officials were briefing residents about the Green Run Lake dredging project on Friday.

People with the Green Run Homes Association have complained that the lakes overflow often because they haven't been dredged.

"We put a lot of pressure on council," said community manager Heidi Daniels, "but it was worth it to see this much needed work begin today."

Work on Canal #1 has already started and officials say it will take about five years to complete work on all six lakes.

Crews also will clean and inspect about 20 miles of pipes in the 40-year-old storm sewer system. When completed, officials say the storm water will run off the streets and into the lakes at a much faster rate.
