VIRGINIA BEACH -- Two men have been arrested for a sexual assault in Virginia Beach that occurred nearly 30 years ago.
The 1986 case was reopened and evidence collected at the scene was resubmitted to the Forensics State Lab, police said. Applying today’s technology, two positive DNA matches were made.
According to our news partners at the Virginian Pilot, two girls were driving along North Witchduck Road on August 24, 1986, when their truck got stuck in the mud. The girls walked to what was then called Bayside Arms Apartments to find help, but were unsuccessful.
When the girls attempted to head back to their vehicle, the Pilot reports, they were dragged into woods by three men and “repeatedly raped and sodomized,” according to court documents. The case went inactive in May 1987.
This week, police charged 50-year-old Clarence Carvell Speller of Portsmouth and 49-year-old Charles Williams Jr. of Virginia Beach with rape.
The men are being held at the Virginia Beach Correctional Center without bond.
These cases remain under investigation.
