VIRGINIA BEACH -- Sunday morning, Rock Church put out the call to its congregation for donations of items that would help victims of Hurricane Sandy in New York. Hours later, the donations started to line up and pile up.
"It was immediate, completely immediate," said Breanna Grimm. "Monday morning, we had more stuff than we knew what to do with, so it was really neat, and we're running into the problem of we don't know where to put all the stuff, but it's a good problem to run into."
"We're working with a group out of Brooklyn that's working all throughout the Manhattan area and, also, working with another group in Long Island," Pastor John Blanchard told 13News. "We're doing everything we can to make a difference. There's people who are hurting. There's people who are desperate, and so we're trying to get them the relief they need as fast as possible."
New or used items (that are clean and in good condition) being collected are:
- Warm clothing
- Children's clothing and shoes
New items that are needed:
- Toilet paper
- Paper towels
- Baby wipes
The church is putting together teams that will take everything to New York and help with distribution. It will continue its collection, and intends to make several runs. The congregation, also, is accepting monetary contributions.
"Personally, it touches my heart, but it also touches my closet, because my wife, she brought several coats to the church, and she showed them to the congregation before she even told me about it, and she said, 'This is what we're sending to New York,'" Blanchard explained, laughing, adding, "but I'm glad to be a part."
Donations can be made at Rock Church, 640 Kempsville Road, Virginia Beach. The phone number is 757-495-5200.
