VIRGINIA BEACH -- Several people were injured after a vehicle crashed into a Hampton Roads Transit bus Wednesday night.
Emergency crews responded to the scene near Virginia Beach Boulevard and North Lynnhaven Road around 7:45 p.m., according to Virginia Beach police.
HRT spokesperson Tom Holden told 13News Now the bus was traveling eastbound on Virginia Beach Boulevard when it was struck by the vehicle that ran a red light.
20 people were on board the bus at the time; 8 of them were taken to the hospital. The extent of their injuries are currently unknown.
"If we made seatbelts available it's questionable whether people would use them. Buses are designed to withstand a significant amount of force and in the event of an accident, it's the same principle on a transit bus as on a school bus: there is some safety in being high up and being in a very heavy vehicle," Holden said.
The driver of the vehicle was also injured. Police say he will be cited for running the red light.
