VIRGINIA BEACH -- Police are investigating the death of a 2-year-old boy and have arrested his mother's boyfriend.

Police say Jerrell Edwards was caring for the boy, Jaidan Lewis, in their Joslin Street home on April 5, 2012  that's housing on Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek.  They say he put the child to sleep, and when he checked on him later, the child was unresponsive.  Edwards called for help and the little boy was taken to the hospital, where he died.

Edwards, 23, is in jail without bond on a charge of felony child neglect.   A determination of counsel hearing is set for April 24 and a preliminary hearing date should be set at that time, Commonwealth's Attorney spokeswoman Macie Pridgen told WVEC.com.

Police say an autopsy will be done to determine how the toddler died.
