VIRGINIA BEACH - An elementary school student had an unloaded BB gun at his bus stop in Va. Beach.

It was in the fourth grader's bookbag and spotted by a concerned parent, who alerted Thoroughgood Elementary School, said spokeswoman Lauren Wicks.

The student was immediately detained once the bus arrived. The bookbag was emptied and the gun was found unloaded, she explained.

Parents were told of the situation around noon in a message from the AlertNow system.  In it, principal Dr. Cheryl Zigrang encouraged parents to talk to their children about safety and the very real consequence of bringing weapons, including toys and look alikes to the school bus stop, bus or school.

Wicks said appropriate disciplinary action is being taken.

No one was hurt and no threats were made.
