VIRGINIA BEACH--City Councilman Bill DeSteph announced his candidacy to represent the 82nd District  in the House of Delegates on Monday

The seat is being vacated by  Bob Purkey, who is retiring.

DeSteph, a Republican, was first elected to Virginia Beach City Council in 2006, and is a Navy Desert Storm veteran and entrepreneur.

In 1999 he joined the defense technology firm AMTI as a senior vice president and co-owner, where he assisted in the growth and eventual sale of the company.

In a release,  Desteph said he is a longtime friend and supporter of Bob Purkey and intends to continue the delegate's ongoing work.
