VIRGINIA BEACH-Nearly 100 workers at the Cavalier Hotels in Virginia Beach are looking for a new job.

In an email to 13News Now, one employee said, "We were led to believe our employment would continue with the company after the renovation and remodel proceeded. Instead, we all found out (Monday) we would all be laid off, and there would be no additional employment with the company."

Professional Hospitality Resources, the company that manages both the Cavalier on the Hill and the Cavalier Oceanfront, told employees the hotels will close by the end of the year. In a statement to 13News Now, officials said, "The decision was made in order to allow for the sequencing of renovation and development activities. The Cavalier Oceanfront hotel will re-open in May 2014 for the summer season, but then close again on Labor Day in advance of further development work."

The company says employees losing their jobs will be the first considered for re-hire next spring at the Cavalier Oceanfront.

During the shutdown, less than ten workers will be on the job until the Cavalier on the Oceanfront reopens next spring.

Statement from Professional Hospitality Resources
October 21, 2013
"Professional Hospitality Resources (PHR), the company responsible for managing The Original Cavalier on the Hill and The Cavalier Oceanfront hotels, informed the properties’ nearly 100 Associates this afternoon that the two hotels will close for operation over the course of November and December of this year. The decision was made in order to allow for the sequencing of renovation and development activities. The Cavalier Oceanfront hotel will re-open in May 2014 for the summer season, but then close again on Labor Day in advance of further development work. It is expected to reopen in 2017. The historic hotel will undergo a complete restoration starting in 2013 and reopen in 2016.
According to Paul H. van Leeuwen, President, Professional Hospitality Resources, a core group of management Associates are being retained in order to start up operations next spring. The balance of the Associates were informed that they would immediately receive consideration for openings at other PHR-managed properties in Virginia Beach and will have priority for re-hire next spring at the Cavalier on the Oceanfront."
