IVOR- Three students were hurt when their bus went off the road in Southampton County on Monday.

The Va. Beach Public Schools bus had been contracted by the Va. Cooperative Extension service to transport 40 children and their counselors to the 4H Camp in Wakefield, explained Beach Schools spokeswoman Lauren Wicks.

Three of the youngsters were taken to Sentara Obici Hospital in Suffolk and their parents were notified. Authorities said their injuries don't appear to be life-threatening.

The driver, 77-year-old Betty Newsom, said she hit a bump in the road, causing the crash.  Newsom has been charged with failure to maintain control.

The crash forced Southampton authorities to block the 33000 block of General Mahone Blvd. (Rt. 460) so everyone on the bus could get out safely. Then a wrecker was called to remove the bus from the side of the road.
