NEWPORT NEWS -- Police say a wrong-way driver hit seven vehicles as he made his way on I-664 late Monday night.

Va. State Police say 56-year-old Robert Charles Madden, Jr. was going south in the northbound lanes around 11:00 p.m. headed towards the inspection booth in Suffolk.

After hitting the vehicles trying to stop him, he turned around and headed back towards the M-and-M, striking the patrol cars of two troopers trying to stop him, Sgt. Michelle Anaya says.

Madden was stopped at Jefferson Avenue and Dresden Drive in Newport News.

He's charged in Suffolk with eight counts of hit-and-run and reckless driving. In Newport News, Madden is charged with DUI, reckless driving, eluding, damage to state property and felony hit and run.
