SUFFOLK -- A mother and her son have been charged in connection to a shooting on Wellons Street in Suffolk Saturday night.
Gwendolyn Burton-Green was arrested without incident Tuesday morning. Her 19-year-old son, Taquan Burton, turned himself in after learning that his mother had been arrested.
Both are charged with shooting in commission of a felony, use or display of a firearm in commission of a felony, malicious shooting, and aggravated malicious wounding.
Emergency dispatchers got a call about gunfire in the 300 block of Wellons at about 10:40 p.m Saturday night.
While officers were on the way there, dispatchers got a second call about a person lying in the street with a possible gun shot wound.
Police said the victim was 20-year-old Trovias Mayfield of Suffolk.
"I just saw him laying there with blood flowing under him like everywhere," said a friend of Mayfield, who asked to remain anonymous. "I thought he was dead."
Mayfield was transported to Sentara Obici Hospital and then airlifted to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. He had surgery and is considered to be in stable condition.
Both suspects are at Western Tidewater Regional Jail with no bond.
