SUFFOLK -- The step-grandmother of a 2-year-old who died last summer after eating prescription drugs kept in a candy container pleaded guilty Wednesday to involuntary manslaughter.
Kimberly Denise Artis, 40, entered the plea in an agreement that reduced the charge from felony murder, according to the Virginian-Pilot. The paper also reports she pleaded guilty to felony child abuse, possession of a controlled drug, and conspiracy to possess a controlled drug.
On July 17, 2011, Suffolk police and rescue personnel found little Destiny Riddick unresponsive in a home in the 1100 block of Truman Road. She was pronounced dead at Sentara Obici Hospital.
The investigation revealed that the child ingested suboxone, a prescription narcotic.
Artis is scheduled to be sentenced Dec. 17 and faces up to 22 years in prison., the Pilot stated.
Her boyfriend, Steven Wade Bullock, 51, pleaded guilty in September to similar charges stemming from the same incident. He also faces sentencing Dec. 17.
