SUFFOLK(AP) -- Construction is scheduled to begin in late fall on the first phase of a biking and walking trail in Suffolk.
The Suffolk Seaboard Coastline Trail will be part of the planned 41-mile South Hampton Roads Trail linking Suffolk, Chesapeake, Portsmouth, Norfolk and Virginia Beach.
When completed, the Suffolk Seaboard Coastline Trail, a 10-foot-wide asphalt path that follows the old railway line, will run 11-and-a-half miles. The first of four sections to be constructed will be about 3 miles of trail.
Suffolk Parks and Recreation Department assistant director Helen Gabriel tells The Virginian-Pilot that the trail will increase recreational opportunities and give commuters a direct path without the hazards of vehicular traffic.
The Pilot also reports the project is estimated to cost between $7 million and $11 million.------
