SUFFOLK – A former firefighter recruit is now charged with felony larceny.

Robert Hodges III, 24, of Smithfield was found to be under the influence of alcohol Monday night while driving a stolen vehicle.

Police received several calls just before 10:00 p.m. July 4 about someone driving recklessly.  An officer spotted the vehicle pulling into Burger King on Bridge Road and pulled in after it.  The driver attempted to go behind the police car but the suspect’s vehicle brushed the corner of the police car.

The owner of the vehicle Hodges was driving had reported it as being stolen.

Hodges is no longer employed with Suffolk Fire and Rescue.  At the time of his arrest, he was in the academy phase of training and was off-duty at the time of the incident.

Hodges is charged with DUI, reckless driving, operating a vehicle without a license and grand larceny auto.
