SUFFOLK (AP) -- Suffolk is joining opponents of a proposed uranium mining operation in Pittsylvania County.
The Virginian-Pilot (http://bit.ly/PK5xni ) says the Suffolk City Council unanimously approved a resolution Wednesday that calls for the state to continue a 30-year moratorium on uranium mining. The resolution says the proposed mining and milling operation could threaten the region's water supply.
Virginia Uranium Inc. wants to mine a uranium deposit near Chatham that the company estimates at 119 million pounds. The company says the deposit can be mined and milled safely. It has asked the state to lift the moratorium.
Virginia Beach and Norfolk also oppose lifting the moratorium.
