SUFFOLK-Suffolk is one step closer to having a new elementary school.

Ground was broken Monday morning for Pioneer Elementary School, which is being built at Holland and Pioneer roads, is scheduled to open in September 2014.  It's designed to serve up to 650 students in Pre-K through Grade 5.

It will replace Southwestern Elementary School.

In June, the School Board voted on the name, deciding against keeping the Southwestern name.

According to the Virginian Pilot,  three members wanted to keep that name because of its roots in the community.
