SUFFOLK--A North Carolina man was arrested Friday for selling moonshine in Suffolk.

Virginia Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control  agents arrested Claude L. Parkerr, 59,  of Gates County and charged him with four counts of sale of untaxed liquor, four counts of possession of untaxed liquor and three counts of transportation of more than three gallons of liquor across the state line. All of the charges are class one misdemeanors punishable with 12 months in jail, a $2500 fine or both, per charge.

ABC agents say the arrest that occurred on Old South Quay Road is the result of a three month investigation involving the Virginia ABC and North Carolina Alcohol Law Enforcement. Suffolk police also assisted.

The undercover investigation began three months ago based on complaints from residents.

ABC undercover operatives purchased moonshine from Parker on several occasions leading up to the arrest. The moonshine sold for $55 per gallon. Agents seized 24 gallons of moonshine and the 1990 Chevy pickup truck Parker was driving.

Agents do not believe Parker manufactured the moonshine and are investigating the source.

After being charged, Parker was released on his personal recognizance for a later appearance in Suffolk General District Court.
