SUFFOLK -- With food and T-shirts for sale, workers at Walmart on Main Street moved into the final hours of a nationwide campaign to raise money for Children's Miracle Network Hospitals.
Money collected by local Walmart stores goes to Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters.
"So many people are affected by CHKD. We just had an associate last week with a 6-month-old baby girl who had brain surgery, and, right now, she's doing perfectly fine," explained Frances Shelton who helped coordinate the store's effort.
Late Friday, the location on Main Street had raised more than $77,000 for CHKD. That's more than any other Walmart in Hampton Roads.
In addition, the store is trying to grab the top fundraising spot, nationally. Its closest competitor is a Walmart in Arizona. The winner receives $10,000 from The Walmart Foundation. It would mean an extra $10,000 for CHKD.
