NEWPORT NEWS -- If your Fourth of July includes fireworks, make sure you're letting the professionals handle them.
Fireworks, including sparklers, are illegal in Hampton Roads and most places in Virginia.
Newport News Fire Marshal Lt. Tom Geiger says, "The little poppers that you throw on the ground and they pop, that's pretty much all that's allowed."
One place fireworks are allowed is Poquoson. At Walton's Fireworks sales were brisk.
Amanda Pitts says it's her family's business. "People come from all over," over she said."Newport News, Norfolk, Poquoson, Hampton, even Virginia Beach." "Many of our customers ask about safety."
Geiger says you have to be trained and certified to handle fireworks in Newport News.
"You can have one go off in your hands or shoot up in your face," he said. "It's also a fire hazard."
According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission, there were about 8700 fireworks related injuries in 2012.
