SUFFOLK-An elementary school student had a pellet gun at school, police said.

A student alerted a teacher at Booker T. Washington Elementary School about the situation on December 3, City spokeswoman Diana Klink told WVEC.com.

The student was located and authorities found an unloaded pellet gun. which he'd forgotten was in his book bag, she added.

Klink stressed the student never displayed the weapon or threatened anyone and the school declined prosecution.

In a letter sent to parents, the principal said, "As you know, this incident is a violation of the school division’s zero-tolerance weapons policy. Because this act is a violation of School Board policy, the student has been recommended for appropriate administrative action."

The letter also suggested families review the weapons policy, which includes toy guns and knives.
