SUFFOLK (AP) -- Dog owners in Suffolk face fines if they tether their animals outdoors.

Suffolk City Council approved an ordinance in March banning dog tethering. The ban went into effect Sept. 1.

Violators will face a $250 fine.

Council members discussed restricting tethering to 10 hours a day. But Police Chief Thomas Bennett said a time limit would be difficult and costly to enforce.
