SUFFOLK- A firefighter managed to save the dog of a family that was displaced by fire Wednesday afternoon.

The fire broke out at a house in the 1200 block of Peachtree Drive, located in the Willowbrook neighborhood of the city,  around 12:37 p.m. An off-duty Suffolk firefighter who was first on the scene rescued the family’s dog from the burning house.

When firefighters arrived they found heavy smoke and flames on the side and rear of the two-story home.  The fire was called under control at approximately 1:19 p.m.

The house sustained heavy damage throughout and displaced the family of two adults and four children. No one was home at the time.  The Hampton Roads Chapter of the American Red Cross is assisting the family.

There were no injuries.

The cause of the fire is undetermined and the fire marshal is investigating. .  .
