SUFFOLK–A contractor hit a gas line in Suffolk Tuesday morning, forcing authorities to evacuate employees and close the Municipal Building, Police Headquarters and the 911 Center for about two hours.

It happened around 8:25 a.m. in the area of Market Street and Henley Place.

City spokeswoman Diana Klink says calls to 911 were not affected and the city gave residents an alternate number to reach the police non-emergency dispatchers during the morning.

People who live nearby had to stay inside until Va. Natural Gas stopped the leak.
