SUFFOLK--Police say a man tried to get money by identifying himself as the police chief and threatening to arrest the person he called.
The call seemed to come from Chief Bennett's office, but it didn't. Authorities say the caller spoofed the chief's phone number to make the threat appear real.
Spoofing is deliberately falsifying the telephone number and/or name relayed as the Caller ID information to disguise the identity of the calling party.
The person who received the call didn't give any money and immediately reported the call.
officials say Suffolk police officers do not call and ask for money and they want to hear from anyone else who's received a similar call.
