Accident blocks part of Hwy 58 East in Suffolk

UPDATE  11 AM: All lanes of travel are now open in the 6000 block of Holland Road, per city of Suffolk. The driver of the tractor trailer in this morning’s accident, Shawn Mebane, age 38, of Reidsville, North Carolina, has been charged with reckless driving.

UPDATE 8:50 AM: Dominion Power tells 13News Now that all customers have had their power restored. No word on when the accident will be cleared.

UPDATE 7:00 AM: Dominion Power tells 13News Now that they have 23 customers in that area without power. They estimate power will be restored between 8 and 10 AM.

SUFFOLK-  The Suffolk Police Department is currently on the scene of a single vehicle accident involving a tractor trailer in the 6000 block of eastbound Holland Road/Route 58. Police Dispatch was notified of the accident at 3:25 a.m.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the tractor trailer lost control and struck a power pole.  The driver was not injured, however, the pole and power lines are currently down and Dominion Power is on the scene.  Approximately 100 homes in the area will be without power for 4 to 5 hours.

One lane of eastbound Holland Road/Route 58 from the Holland Bypass to Longstreet Lane is closed indefinitely. Staff from Suffolk Public Works will assist with any lane closures or required alternating travel lanes.
